Following a new wave of island-wide protests in Cuba over the past several days, there are worrying indicators that the authorities are repeating the repressive tactics they used for decades and also during the crackdown on protesters on 11 July last year, said Amnesty International today.
“In the latest wave of protests that have lasted several days, Cubans are exercising their simple but historically repressed rights to freedom of expression and assembly. Alarmingly, it seems the authorities are repeating the tactics of repression they used last year to detain and silence protesters, hundreds of whom remain in prison,” said Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas director at Amnesty International.
“The international community must condemn the cycles of repression we are seeing in Cuba in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable for authorities to keep intimidating, threatening, detaining, stigmatizing, and attempting to silence anyone who demands necessities like electricity, food, and freedom.”
Since the start of protests in late September, Amnesty International has received reports of on-going internet interference, deployment of police and military, including cadets, to repress the protests, and arbitrary detentions.
Starting on the evening of 29 September, the Cuban authorities appear to have intentionally shut down internet access throughout the country. The internet outage lasted for at least two consecutive nights.
Cuban authorities control the country’s only telecommunication network and have often restricted internet access during politically sensitive times or moments of protests.
Alarmingly, it seems the authorities are repeating the tactics of repression they used last year to detain and silence protesters, hundreds of whom remain in prison.

Amnesty International has heard that the latest internet outages have made it hard for families to communicate following the passage of hurricane Ian, at a time when many people have had their homes damaged. They have also impacted the ability of independent human rights observers, including Amnesty International, and independent journalists to document the human rights situation in the country. Journalist Luz Escobar told Amnesty International that her internet was cut three nights in a row, impacting her ability to work, and that as of 4 October, several other journalists working at her independent online newspaper, 14 y medio, were without internet.
Amnesty International’s Crisis Evidence Lab has also analysed several videos that did not appear online before these protests. One video which Amnesty International analysed was filmed on Street 41, at the corner of 66 in Havana, Cuba, and appears to show the deployment of plain-clothed military cadets, armed with baseball bats, chanting pro-government slogans, including “I am Fidel.”
Another video, which also first appeared online in the context of the protests, and which is consistent with other videos Amnesty International has verified from the protests, appears to also show cadets with baseball bats chasing and then detaining protesters.
The Cuban authorities have developed a sophisticated machinery for controlling any form of dissent and protest, as previously documented by Amnesty International. While state security officials often carry out surveillance and arbitrary detentions of critics, the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (local members of the Communist Party who collaborate with state officials and law enforcement agencies) also provide the state with information about, what is considered, “counter-revolutionary activity.” “Acts of repudiation” – demonstrations led by government supporters with the alleged participation of state security officials – are also commonplace and aimed at harassing and intimidating government critics.
While communication with Cuba remains stunted due to internet interference, Justicia J11, a group established following the crackdown on protesters in July 2021 – has reported 26 detentions since 30 September, mostly of young people and artists, 19 of whom they reported remained in detention as of 4 October 2022.
Cuban authorities criminalized nearly all those who participated in the protests in July 2021, including some children, but flatly denied any human rights violations, and placed the blame for the economic situation almost exclusively on the US economic embargo. Similarly, on 2 October 2022, President Díaz-Canel downplayed the widespread nature of the latest protests and suggested that a minority of “counter-revolutionaries” with connections outside Cuba, had carried out “acts of vandalism such as blocking roads or throwing rocks” and would be dealt with with the “force of the law.”
Background
Following the passage of hurricane Ian, the electricity has been cut in multiple parts of the island, adding to the frequent electricity outages in recent months. NASA night-time light data showed a significant decrease in lights between 23 September, before the passing of Ian, and after, on 30 September.
Electricity outages have exacerbated violations of economic and social rights in the country, as in recent months Cubans have had to line up for many hours to buy food and other necessities, in the context of widespread food shortages.
The recent protests have occurred just 14 months after the similar widespread protests on 11 July 2021, which were followed by a crackdown on dissent. Hundreds remain imprisoned for the 11 July protests, including three prisoners of conscience: artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo Pérez, as well as leader of the non-official opposition, José Daniel Ferrer García. Other prisoners of conscience named by Amnesty International at the time were released on the condition of going into exile.

MSNBC host Joy Reid said Tuesday night on her show that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley was “the greatest patriot that was on duty during” former President Donald Trump’s administration.
“Good luck with that because he seems to be the greatest patriot that was on duty during the previous administration,” Reid said when Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire said that Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio had called for President Joe Biden to fire Milley.
The MSNBC host went on to say that Milley was “emerging as a pretty heroic and important American figure in this era.”
Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa alleged in their upcoming book “Peril” that Milley was “certain” that Trump “had gone into a serious mental decline” after his loss in the 2020 election, according to a review of the book by CNN. The general was reportedly worried that the former president could “go rogue.”

Mary Shelley described Dr. Victor Frankenstein as an Italian-Swiss scientist born into one of the most distinguished families of Genoa, though he was born in Naples. He obtained one of the best scientific educations available at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria. Gifted in mathematics and chemistry, he succeeded in creating a human-like creature by assembling dead tissue and reanimating it. The trouble was, upon completing his task, Frankenstein perceived his own creature to be a crude and repulsive imitation of a human being and not a real one.
At this moment in the story, the brilliant and arrogant scientist becomes all too human by dodging responsibility for his abominable creation. When people around him are murdered, he knows his creature is the culprit, but instead of revealing the truth to his community, he tries to conceal it.
The only time Frankenstein shows any courage is when he denies the creature’s demand for a female companion. Only then does he realize there is no way he can continue playing God.
In recent years, I’ve often thought about Shelley’s fascinating novel, which was apparently inspired by her relationship with her husband, the English poet and amateur scientist, Percy Shelley. She was reflecting on how rapid advances in science altered our understanding of ourselves and our limitations.
The intellectual and spiritual problem she identified in 1818 is orders of magnitude more severe today with the advent of modern technology, which has grossly distorted our understanding of the human condition. Consider the following immutable facts that so many of us now struggle to recognize and accept:
1. We’re born either male or female (with the notable exception of children born with ambiguous genitalia or intersex characteristics). No amount of surgery or hormones can change this essential fact.
2. We grow old, and we lose our youthful appearance. No amount of surgery or other procedures can change that.
3. Our health is impaired by the excess consumption of calories, alcohol, and drugs. We can’t consume whatever we please and expect to remain fit. Having excess body fat is unhealthy.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it quickly became apparent that the greatest factors for serious disease were morbid obesity and diabetes—common American conditions that are curable by changes of habit and lifestyle, not by expensive patented medications.
4. Medical science can’t create a pill or shot to relieve every ailment. We have to assume responsibility for our health and cultivate good habits for taking care of ourselves.
5. Medical science can’t create a superior substitute for the human immune system. Conventional vaccines work by inducing natural immunity, not by replacing it. Anyone acquainted with basic immunology understood this before SARS-CoV-2 arrived.
The preposterous notion that the vaccinated possessed better immunity than the COVID-recovered was one of the biggest lies of the pandemic. . .

NY Man Released Without Bail After Savagely Beating Ex-Wife Immediately Kills Her Upon Release | National File
A Buffalo man who was arrested after his estranged wife uploaded a video of her being savagely beaten to Facebook in a plea for help, immediately killed his wife after being released without bail in connection of three. The mother of three was murdered in front of her children, sparking fresh outrage over the state’s no-cash bail policies.
Adam Bennefield, 45, who has a prior conviction for kidnapping another ex at gunpoint, is being charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his 30-year-old wife, Keaira Bennefield.
According to the New York Post, Keaira Bennefield was gunned down while taking her young children — whose ages range from 6 months to 9 years-old — to school on the morning of October 5. The mother of three was ambushed on a road and subsequently shot dead in front of her young children, police said.
Adam Bennefield allegedly carried out the killing just one day after his release from custody in connection with a domestic violence incident. He was released without bail despite savagely beating his now-deceased ex-wife in a disturbing video that the victim uploaded to Facebook as a cry for help.
The accused killer could be seen punching, kicking and stomping on the victim, who begged him to stop. Adam Bennefield was arrested a few days later the video was posted. He was slapped with misdemeanor charges and served an order of protection, which evidently, he immediately violated in carrying out the murder, police said.
He is now facing a litany of charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with the killing.

The public has expressed outrage and asked if anything more could have been done, as Bennefield’s violent behavior was well known to law enforcement.
On September 28 when Keaira called 911 to say she’d been punched by Bennefield in her home, the Buffalo News reported. Cheektowaga Police responded to the domestic violence call and obtained an arrest warrant for Bennefield for harassment. Cops told her to notify them if her estranged husband returned to the home.
Fearing for her safety, the victim posted the video to Facebook later that night. “This is what this man dose [sic] to me but i’m always treated like i’m the abuser!” Keaira Bennefield wrote in the post.
The lengthy video (nearly 8-minutes long) allegedly showed Bennefield tackling his wife, pinning her down and savagely punching her repeatedly, the New York Post reported. He was arrested days later after Keira showed the footage to law enforcement.
Despite the disturbing nature of the attack, prosecutors slapped Adam Bennefield with misdemeanor charges including third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree menacing and second-degree unlawful imprisonment.
He was arraigned in Cheektowaga Town Court on October 4, but was released due to a New York law that prevented the judge from from setting bail due to the low-level of the charges, Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn said.
“There was zero evidence for anything higher than that,” Flynn said of the misdemeanor charges. “The charges were correctly charged. The judge had no choice but to release this person.”
The law — which was enacted by the Democrat-controlled state legislature and upheld Governor Hochul — also prevented the judge from considering his previous armed kidnapping charge in setting bail. New York is one of the few states in the nation that prevents judges from considering the “dangerousness” of accused criminals when determining bail and release agreements.
Following her estranged husband’s release, Keira Bennefield was reportedly in such fear for her life that she wore a bulletproof vest on the morning she was murdered. As she was driving her kids to school, Adam Bennefield allegedly crashed into the car before gunning his ex-wife down with a shotgun.
He then fled the scene and was later apprehended after a week-long manhunt. He has been held without bail since his October 21 arraignment and faces life in prison if convicted.
New York’s lax cash bail laws, which have led to numerous instances of recently released felons committing homicide, have become a major topic leading up to the state’s razor close gubernatorial race. Republican challenger Lee Zeldin (R-NY) has vowed to amend the state’s bail reform laws if elected.
Hochul has at times criticized the state’s “bail reform” laws, though she has yet to call for any policy changes. The New York governor recently framed public outcry over rising crime as an altered perception due to media coverage.

Arizona state Rep. Mark Finchem is crediting Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk after Twitter suspended his account for no apparent reason on Oct. 31 and the company restored it less than an hour later.
He said it looks like Musk came to his defense.
“He said, ‘Let me look into it.’ Forty-five minutes later, he posted that our Twitter feed was back on,” said Finchem, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for Arizona secretary of state.
However, it was not clear whether Musk directly intervened on Finchem’s behalf. Musk began firing top executives after he finalized the purchase of the social media platform for $44 billion last week….

On Tuesday, CNBC’s ‘Squawk on the Street’ host Jim Cramer stunned his co-hosts by endorsing the use of “propaganda” to spread information about COVID-19.
The stock market saw a sharp increase this week as rumors circulated on social media that China could ease its COVID restrictions and open its borders by March and that would be headed by China’s chief propagandist, Mediate reported.
The panel also discussed the recent news in China where visitors were barred from leaving the park until their COVID test results came back after a woman who visited the park tested positive for COVID.
Jim Cramer offered an opinion so unusual that left his co-hosts in awkward silence.
“Some of the videos that came out of Shanghai Disney gym, where they had to suspend operations to comply with the prevention measures, but literally kept people in the park until they came back with a negative test,” Carl Quintanilla said.
Cramer then retorted that he didn’t see any problems with China’s response given that they could have the test result in 24 hours.
“I had a PCR test with someone at ten, they gave it to me by five. So I don’t think it’s wrong.”
“Let’s just go back over, I think chief propagandists, I call that person a dissembler, so to speak. But they have a narrative in which basically you can conquer COVID by just being locked down, and this has to change the narrative…”
“What is even better is homegrown mRNA, which I’m told they managed to get the intellectual property, stole it, which is good, and I say good because it’s better to have mRNA than not,” Cramer said, referring to China’s response to COVID-19.
“Let’s just say they appropriated it. What do you do if you tell people the way to beat it is no vaccine and now you have a vaccine? So I think what you need is a propagandist,” Cramer said, leaving his co-hosts speechless.

The first post-COVID election in the United States is upon us and Republicans and Democrats are flying through this final week in decidedly different moods.
Republicans are eagerly anticipating riding a red wave that they hope carries them to majorities in the House and Senate, and then to the White House in 2024.
The Democrats, on the other hand, are all weighed down by a Joe Biden-shaped millstone and the sudden, harsh realization that substituting pathological prevarication for policy is no longer a winning strategy for them.
The conventional wisdom is that a toxic combination of inflation and crime will do the Democrats in. The amount of effort being spent by Dem politicians and their flying monkeys in the mainstream media to assure the voting riffraff that neither inflation nor crime is a real problem lends credence to this.
There are other issues wrought by the sham Biden presidency and the moron collective in the majority on Capitol Hill that are hurting the Dems this year, but it’s the unsettling combo of feeling unsafe when we leave our houses and spending too much money on groceries that’s kneecapping them.
We should remember, however, that there is one gargantuan issue that got us to all of these big issues that are ruining our lives: COVID. Had the Wuhan Chinese Bat Flu not broken free and done its damage, Joe Biden would still be in his Delaware basement playing with his Legos and eating Cheerios out of a little baggie.
Never was the Democrats’ motto “Never let a crisis go to waste,” seized upon more quickly than at the outbreak of the COVID pandemic. I will say this once again with all sincerity: they didn’t give a damn about anyone’s health, they just saw an opportunity to use it against Donald Trump whether there was any validity to it or not.
Because they are very good at doing things that are bad for America, the Democrats found myriad sinister ways to use the COVID panic to their advantage. The worst of them was, of course, using COVID panic as an excuse to change election laws on the fly at the last minute to throw the 2020 presidential election into complete disarray. Anyone who actually thinks that — as the Dems LOVE to say — the 2020 election was one of the cleanest in American history is an idiot.
It’s true that many Republican elected officials went along with a lot of the nonsense between March 2020 and the election. As I have written many times, people can be forgiven for a lot of what went on in the early days of COVID. Nobody knew what was going on then. By the end of the summer, however, the good citizens of the United States were beginning to weed out the shady antics.
Those of us who have been involved in American politics for a long time are never surprised when a Republican politician wanders straight into a trap set by the Democrats. They still do it because most of them haven’t admitted to themselves just how low their “esteemed colleagues” across the aisle will go to gain an advantage.
What the Democrats did in the name of COVID after “winning” the election is why they really deserve to be tossed out on their commie behinds.

U.S. Capitol Police had live video feed at Pelosi home but didn’t notice break-in: Sources | Just The News
Alive security video feed at the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi caught the suspect in the recent assault on her husband Paul Pelosi, but no one from the U.S. Capitol Police was watching, sources told Just the News.
U.S. Capitol Police did not return numerous requests for comment on Tuesday.
A source revealed to Just the News that the officer who was in charge of monitoring the feed didn’t notice the break-in occurred until the flashing strobe lights from responding San Francisco police squads were visible on the feed.
Berkeley resident David DePape has been charged in the attack.
Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said that the department is currently conducting a formal review of the incident but declined to provide further detail in a statement released on Tuesday.
Speaker Pelosi was not in San Francisco at the time of the attack.

Key Hasidic groups are endorsing Republican Lee Zeldin (R-Suffolk) for governor over Gov. Kathy Hochul in the latest sign that the incumbent is struggling with historically Democratic constituencies ahead of the final day of voting on Nov. 8.
Support from the Brooklyn-based Bobov, Bobov-45, Belz and Satmar groups could lead to thousands of additional votes for Zeldin as he pushes for a historic upset next week in a state where a Republican has not been elected governor in a generation.
“The leaders have been very engaged. They want to fight the rise of violent anti semitism. They want to fight anti semitism on our streets, in our schools and in the halls of government. They care about yeshiva education,” Zeldin told The Post Tuesday.
The Long Island pol has campaigned hard on rising crime and inflation while also blasting state oversight of yeshivas amid a state crackdown and growing scrutiny of some schools where students are reportedly not getting educated enough in non-religious subjects.
Jewish Community Center to Host Drag Queen Story Hour As Part Of ‘Family Fun’ Day | The Daily Caller
A Jewish community center in Wisconsin is hosting a drag queen story hour as a part of a “Family Fun Day” event, according to the center’s website.
The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, will host a Drag Queen Story Hour on Nov. 13, structured for children between the ages 2 and 5 years old, according to the center’s website. After the reading, families will put together a “mitzvah” project as charity towards the Jewish Community Pantry. The event will feature the Drag Queen Story Hour Milwaukee chapter, who will read books to the children on social justice.
Rabbi Yaakov Menken, Managing Director of the Coalition for Jewish Values, a non-profit that focuses on conserving classical Jewish ideas, told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the drag queen story hour is in contradiction to traditional Jewish beliefs.
“The entire purpose of this organization is to promote behaviors contrary to Judaism, beginning from the explicit verse in Deuteronomy prohibiting ‘cross-dressing,’ wearing clothing intended for the other gender,” Menken told the DCNF. “That, of course, is the least of the digressions from Judaism promoted by this group. It has no place in front of vulnerable children, and certainly not in a Jewish setting.”

China Dismisses ‘Fabricated’ Virus Leak Theory Revived by Report | Bloomberg
China lashed out at a report about a lab in the city of Wuhan where the coronavirus first appeared, saying it was driven by politics in the US.
“US politicians are rehashing the lab-leak theory to smear China in disregard of facts,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Monday at a regular press briefing in Beijing. “Such acts are driven by ill-intentions. This will only hamper science-based origins tracing and undermine international anti-Covid cooperation.”
The Asian nation has “made it clear on multiple occasions that the lab-leak theory from Wuhan is nothing but a lie fabricated by anti-China forces for political purposes and it has nothing to do with science,” he said.
Vanity Fair and the investigative news outlet ProPublica published an article on Friday that alleged that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was more troubled than previously known. It also says Chinese President Xi Jinping may have been briefed on problems at the facility in November 2019, months before the virus was first detected in Wuhan.
Zhao sidestepped a question about Xi and the lab at the press briefing.

Commentary: Elon Musk Is a Much-Needed Insult to the Coddled Consensus Class That Is Ruining America | Georgia Star News

“The Bird is Freed!”
That’s what Elon Musk tweeted upon the consummation of his bid to buy Twitter. ’Twas a consummation devoutly to be wished. Why? For one thing, as Musk later tweeted, henceforth comedy once again will now be “legal on Twitter.”
Musk’s acquisition of Twitter for more money than you or I can really contemplate ($44 billion) lit the punditocracy ablaze. On the Left there was, as St. Matthew (13:42) put it in another context, abundant “fletus et stridor dentium,” “wailing and gnashing of teeth.” On the Right, there were cheers and not a little “Schadenfreude,” which is German for “serves you right, knucklehead.” The Right also went in for some creative trolling.
The dominant narrative, on the Left anyway, is that Musk’s acquisition of Twitter represents a conservative takeover of the social media giant. Twitter had been a brash and scrappy upstart, you see, and now it has been “colonized” by the rich and powerful. . . .
That’s the idea, anyway. You can practically hear the Nabobs of the Narrative holding their breath while they wait to see if the public buys it.
Their public will, of course. But how about the rest of us?
The New York Times gave fastidious expression to this canard in a story headlined “Twitter, Once a Threat to Titans, Now Belongs to One.” A “threat to titans,” eh? What do you suppose that means? The Times explains in its subhead. “A decade ago, the social media platform was a tool for rebels and those challenging authority. But over time, the powerful learned how to use it for their own goals.”
In order to appreciate how funny this is, you can start with CNN’s story about the pile of money paid to the executives that Musk, in his first order of business, fired on Thursday. It is a large pile. According to CNN, Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s former CEO, Ned Segal (former CFO), and Vijaya Gadde (former Chief Legal Officer) will walk away with nearly $200 million. (I pause so that you, along with many others, can savor the word “former.”)
Gadde, by the way, was not only paid many millions of dollars a year but was also instrumental in engineering the expulsion of Donald Trump, then the president of the United States, from the platform.
The idea that Twitter was a challenge to the establishment before the advent of Musk is almost as wrong as the idea that Musk is conservative and that he aims to transform Twitter into a a bastion of Trumpesque MAGA (or, to quote Joe Biden’s focus group, “ultra-MAGA”) sentiment.
As Musk has repeatedly stressed, his aim is to open Twitter to a wide range of political viewpoints, Left as well Right, “progressive” as well as conservative. By removing the top executives, Musk merely removed a hose spewing intolerance camouflaged as inarguable virtue. Marinated in that sentiment, many of Twitter’s 7,500 employees doubtless have absorbed the mantra that “free speech” means “speech I agree with.” In the run up to Musk’s takeover of Twitter, rumors were rife that he planned to fire “75 percent” of the workforce. Musk later denied that, but everyone expects him to put the company on a serious diet.
Everyone also expects him to make big changes in the way the company oversees “content” on Twitter. Musk is the very incarnation of a man in a hurry. His firing of Agrawal, Sega, and Gadde happened before his name could be painted on the door to his office. So did his immediate deployment of software engineers from Tesla to review Twitter source code.
But on issues of general policy he seems to be moving more deliberately. Twitter distinguished itself by its intolerance of views that challenged the dominant progressive narrative on everything from the presidency of Donald Trump, Hunter Biden’s laptop (really, a subset of Twitter’s Trump allergy), “climate change,” BLM, and various approved forms of “progressive” sexual pathology. Trespassing upon any of those orthodoxies could get you suspended, “shadow banned,” or banned outright.
That will change, but not all at once. Soon after taking over, Musk announced (on Twitter, bien sur) that the company would be “forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”
There are, I think, two major things to bear in mind about Musk’s takeover of Twitter. One is that, although he is not himself a conservative, the fact that he supports a robust view of free speech in which a wide variety of opinions are not only tolerated but encouraged means that he will be regarded as an existential threat by the progressive establishment.
That establishment is right to regard him as a threat. For its guardians require strict conformity in dispensing their twisted gospel of “diversity” if they are to maintain their power and perquisites. Open the door just a little, let just a little sunlight in, and pow! The magic spell that made it seem OK to say that men are women, that “climate change” is a threat to humanity, that COVID is a peril on the same plane as the Black Death, or that BLM and Antifa were justified in burning down our cities—suddenly that spell is broken, and so is the hold over the narrative that these new guardians of conformity had enforced.
The second thing to bear in mind is that the establishment will not sit idly by as Elon Musk challenges their narrative. Everything about Musk is an insult to the coddled, low-testosterone consensus that has been ruining America this last decade through the promulgation of its dependency agenda. It is no accident, as the Marxists say, that even as Musk pushes ahead with his reformation of Twitter, the coercive busybodies of the state have begun making minatory noises about “investigating” Musk. Thus we read that Tesla is under federal investigation over autopilot claims.
Expect more of that. Beatings will continue until morale improves. As Glenn Reynolds put it at Instapundit, “The Bureaucracy Mobilizes Against A Threat.” Were the midterms not just around the corner, I might be worried about this coalescing threat against Elon Musk. But come November 9, the clock will be ticking against that sclerotic, freedom-hating consensus. The bird is freed, and we will be too. Fiat Musk!
