Privacy Is Still a Victim When Rape Cases Hit the Justice System
Things were supposed to be different this time, Brooke thought in disbelief as the police officer demanded that she hand over every scrap of data on her phone to investigators — not because she was suspected of a crime, but because she was the victim of one. Years earlier, a man who Brooke had until then considered a friend pulled her into a London alley, pushed her against a wall, choked her and violently sexually assaulted her. Her fear and humiliation, more than just the invasion of her body, seemed to be his goal. Several times, she said, she broke free, only to have him catch her, throw her back against the wall, and assault her again.
She reported the attack to the police, who were initially supportive, she said. But then they closed her case after she refused to submit to a “digital strip search” — Britain’s policy of requiring victims of sex crimes to give the police full access to their phone data, social media accounts, school records and even therapists’ notes.
“I always assumed before any of this ever happened to me that the assault would have been the most traumatic thing that could happen,” said Brooke, an actress living in London. (The Times is not using her full name because she is a victim of sexual assault.) But in fact, she said, she found the experience of reporting the crime to the police, only to be treated like a suspect to be investigated herself, far worse.
Fewer than 2 percent of rape cases reported to the police in Britain are ever prosecuted. And the digital strip search is just one of the many policies that a recent government report criticized as contributing to the justice system’s catastrophic failures on rape and sexual assault.
Brooke’s experience is a microcosm of the ways that efforts to address those failures, though fueled by unprecedented public demand for change in the post-#MeToo era, are doomed unless they reckon with the societal and institutional conditions that created them in the first place. . . .
House Democrat-led Jan. 6 select panel schedules first hearing
The select committee looking into the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol will hold its first hearing July 27, Democratic leaders announced Wednesday.
The panel, which is currently made up of eight House lawmakers — seven Democrats as well as Republican Liz Cheney of Wyoming — will hear testimony from law enforcement officers who were assaulted by supporters of former President Donald Trump during the melee.
“We need to hear how they felt, we need to hear what people who broke into the Capitol said to them,” committee chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) told the Associated Press last week.
The House voted largely along party lines on June 30 to set up the select committee after Senate Republicans blocked legislation to create a 9/11-style commission to examine the origins of the riot. . . .
Former Harris Campaign Official Launches Group To Advise Companies On Social Justice Issues
Vice President Kamala Harris’ former campaign finance chair is reportedly launching a strategic advisory firm to advise companies and corporate executives on social justice and other political issues, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Jon Henes, a corporate attorney at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis, plans to launch the New York-based group in early September, CNBC first reported. Henes was the national campaign finance chair for Harris’ campaign during the 2020 election and later moved his fundraising efforts to support then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden, according to CNBC.
One source familiar with the matter noted the new advisory firm is initially planning to hire at least 15 people and could later expand operations to Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco, CNBC reported. The firm will also include teams that focus on environmental, social and corporate governance, along with workplace diversity, equity and inclusion, sources added. . . .
U.S. Military Leadership’s Slow Descent Into Madness | “Joint Chiefs Chairman Compared Trump to Hitler, MAGA to Nazi ‘Brownshirts'”
After the 2020 election, Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, compared President Donald Trump to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and Trump’s supporters in the MAGA movement to Nazi brownshirts. This only further underscores conservative fears about President Joe Biden’s efforts to root out “extremism” in the military.
“Milley told his staff that he believed Trump was stoking unrest, possibly in hopes of an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act and call out the military,” Washington Post reporters Carol Leaning and Philip Rucker wrote in their forthcoming book I Alone Can Fix It, CNN reported.
According to the book, Milley feared Trump would launch a coup and he prepared a plan to get the army to resign en masse rather than prevent the peaceful transition of power.
“They may try, but they’re not going to f**king succeed,” Milley reportedly told his deputies. “You can’t do this without the military. You can’t do this without the CIA and the FBI. We’re the guys with the guns.” . . .

What is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) doing spying on American citizens?
The FBI has been seriously abusing its warrantless electronic surveillance authority on American Citizens. This should alarm you.

“I’m a patriot and I love this nation. And I believe in the people standing up against the government in the correct way. So, if that makes me radical and an extremist, so be it.” ~ Former Navy Seal Jonathan Gilliam | FBI Asks Americans to Report their Friends, Family | Video: 5 Minutes 40 Seconds
“I’m a patriot and I love this nation. And I believe in the people standing up against the government in the correct way. So, if that makes me radical and an extremist, so be it. Put me on a list. I’m okay with it. . . . At the same time all of this is going on in Cuba, the very people who would stand up against the tyranny in this nation, the oppression in this nation, the very people who are being oppressed whether it’s through social media or the government itself, those are the people they (FBI) are wanting on a list. Not gang members, not people who are in organized crime. They are not asking for any of Hunter Biden’s drug friends. They want good loving, America loving patriots on that list.” ~ Former Navy Seal Jonathan Gilliam
A Covid Test as Easy as Breathing
In May, musicians from dozens of countries descended on Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for the Eurovision Song Contest. Over the course of the competition, the performers — clad in sequined dresses, ornate crowns or, in one case, an enormous pair of angel wings — belted and battled it out for their chance at the title.
But before they were even allowed onstage, they had to pass another test: a breath test.
When they arrived at the venue, the musicians were asked to exhale into a water-bottle-sized device called the SpiroNose, which analyzed the chemical compounds in their breath to detect signatures of a coronavirus infection. If the results came back negative, the performers were cleared to compete.
The SpiroNose, made by the Dutch company Breathomix, is just one of many breath-based Covid-19 tests under development across the world. In May, Singapore’s health agency granted provisional authorization to two such tests, made by the domestic companies Breathonix and Silver Factory Technology. And researchers at Ohio State University say they have applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an emergency authorization of their Covid-19 breathalyzer.
“It’s clear now, I think, that you can detect this disease with a breath test,” said Paul Thomas, a chemist at Loughborough University in England. “This isn’t science fiction.” . . .
21 Countries Demand China End Attack on Press Freedom in Hong Kong
The United States and 20 other countries have issued a joint statement expressing concern about the current and future outlook of press freedom in Hong Kong.
The group of 21 governments—part of the “Media Freedom Coalition” that was established in 2019 to advocate for press freedom and the safety of journalists—pointed to the recent forced closure of Apple Daily, a major pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong, and the arrest of the paper’s staff.
“The use of the National Security Law to suppress journalism is a serious and negative step which undermines Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and the rights and freedoms of people in Hong Kong, as provided for in the Hong Kong Basic Law and the Sino-British Joint Declaration,” the July 10 statement reads.
Freedoms in the financial hub have been disappearing at an alarming rate after the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) imposition of its draconian national security law last summer. Since then, dozens of the city’s pro-democracy opposition leaders are now either facing prosecution or sitting in jail, if they haven’t already fled overseas as political refugees.
Recently, Amnesty International stated that the law “has put Hong Kong on a rapid path to becoming a police state and created a human rights emergency for the people living there.” Reporters Without Borders called on democracies around the world “to put more pressure on the Chinese regime to end its authoritarian policies and ensure the restoration of press freedom” in Hong Kong. . . .
Rob Schneider Stands Up Against The Globalist Vaccine Agenda

Saturday Night Live legend Rob Schneider is taking on the globalist vaccine agenda, sparking criticism of Schneider from the left. A longtime Freedom-loving patriot, Schneider is not backing down.
— Rob Schneider (@RobSchneider) July 10, 2021
Recently, Schneider helped the Truth movement to score a big activist victory. The comedian threatened to cut off all association with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a group that he has long worked with, if Make-A-Wish went ahead with their plan to vaccinate all of their “wish” children, including terminally ill kids who try to meet celebrities or go to theme parks or receive other special “wishes” before they die. Chastened, the Make-A-Wish Foundation reversed course and decided not to mandate the vaccine.
“Make-a-Wish will only grant wishes to terminally ill children who are fully vaccinated?!”
While it has been an honor to work with this foundation over the years,
if this policy of discrimination of children is true?
I will never work with them again.
Ever https://t.co/rBfWyzJk4y— Rob Schneider (@RobSchneider) June 27, 2021
“We understand that there are many families whose children aren’t eligible for the vaccine yet, and we also know that there are families who are choosing to not get the vaccine. We respect everyone’s freedom of choice. Make-a-Wish will continue to grant wishes for all eligible children. Make-a-Wish will not require anyone to get vaccinated to receive a wish,” Make-A-Wish declared Sunday following public outrage including from Rob Schneider. “Any child fighting a critical illness is eligible for Make-a-Wish. While it does not reflect the majority of children we serve, we do occasionally serve children whose medical provider has determined that the child will not survive their illness. In time-sensitive situations involving an end-of-life diagnosis, a special process has been and will continue to be in place regardless of vaccination status.”
Schneider previously lambasted Alec Baldwin’s hateful propaganda impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, saying, “To me, the genius of Dana Carvey was Dana always had empathy for the people he played, and Alec Baldwin has nothing but a fuming, seething anger toward the person he plays.” Schneider said, “I don’t find his impression to be comical. Because, like I said, I know the way his politics lean and it spoils any surprise. There’s no possible surprise. He so clearly hates the man he’s playing.” Schneider also endorsed liberty Republican Tim Donnelly for Governor of California in a recent election and said that Democrats “abandoned me, and so I have abandoned them.”
Rob Schneider has played many classic characters, including the “Makin’ Copies” guy on Saturday Night Live, Deuce Bigelow in Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo, and the optimistic “You Can Do It” interloper in The Waterboy. His standup tours can be followed on his Twitter account. . . .
Violent offences committed by men who self-identify as female ‘are distorting crime figures’
Violent offences committed by men who self-identify as female are being recorded as having been perpetrated by women – leading to claims that the practice is distorting official crime figures.
It was highlighted by the case of former police support officer Zoe Watts, who was jailed last week for a string of offences including building an improvised bomb and having a cache of illegal weapons including knives and a stun gun.
The 35-year-old worked for Lincolnshire Police for eight years. . . .
Even kids-book writers feel forced to apologize for condemning anti-Semitism
Israel, and Jews, can’t get a break these days — even from kid-lit authors.
Addressing the US surge in anti-Semitism, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators finally condemned Jew-hatred in a statement last month — but only to water it down with a later post.
Anti-Semitism has fueled “a 75% increase in hate speech and random violence against Jewish people,” read the group’s initial statement. “As writers, illustrators, and translators of children’s literature, we are responsible for promoting equity” for “all children and all families.”
The group warned that “silence” on such an issue “is often mistaken for acceptance” and urged readers to speak out “against all forms of hate, including antisemitism.”
Yet after some pushback — particularly from one Palestinian-American activist and writer — the group posted an apology to “everyone in the Palestinian community who felt unrepresented, silenced or marginalized” and to the activist, in particular, for deleting her posts on its Facebook page (which it apparently first considered hateful) and blocking her on Twitter.
SCBWI’s diversity chief, a black Jewish woman, actually resigned, saying she regrettably “neglected to address the rise in Islamophobia” — and later reported getting death threats. . . .
Amazon Calls for Higher Taxes on All Corporations Except Itself
While the tech giant Amazon has publicly endorsed proposals to raise the corporate tax rate in the United States, the company has been secretly lobbying to keep its own tax rates low, Politico reports.
Last year, during the 2020 presidential election, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos openly supported then-candidate Joe Biden’s proposals to raise taxes on American corporations. Those proposals have re-emerged in recent weeks as a possible means of funding a possible infrastructure bill, and Biden has been advocating for other countries around the world to adopt higher corporate tax rates as well.
But recently, Amazon has been stepping up its lobbying efforts to try to convince Congress and the White House to allow the company to keep using certain tax breaks in order to keep its own rates low. The retail giant hired a tax lobbyist named Joshua Odintz, who formerly worked as a Democratic aide on Capitol Hill and then as an official in the Obama Administration. In addition to Amazon’s own efforts, similar lobbying has been undertaken by a group known as the “R&D Coalition,” which consists of several companies and organizations including Amazon, Intel, and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Odintz and the R&D Coalition have been lobbying in favor of preserving the “research and development tax deduction.” First implemented in 1981, the R&D deduction includes a tax credit that incentivizes companies to invest more in R&D in exchange for tax breaks on all expenditures related to these areas of spending.
Although the R&D deduction is not the only method through which Amazon and other companies can lower their own taxes, Amazon confirmed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the bulk of its tax reductions “were primarily related to the U.S. federal research and development credit.”
While the exact amount of money saved by this credit alone remains uncertain, Matthew Gardner, senior fellow at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, said that it is “very likely they’re getting hundreds of millions of dollars a year in R&D tax credits.”
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed by Congress in 2017 and signed into law by President Donald Trump, actually took steps to reduce the impact of the R&D tax credit. The law required companies to deduct their total amounts of R&D funding every year over the course of five years, which reduced the overall value of the tax break.
When asked about the possible R&D loophole, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, speaking on behalf of the Biden Administration, said that “promoting innovation is a critical priority…continuing to allow firms to expense R&D rather than shifting to amortizing could be one very effective way to bring that about.”

Conservative National Radio Host Wayne Allyn Root Announces Support for Black Reparations
Source: (AP Photo/Morry Gash
I’m the last guy you’d ever imagine coming out in support of reparations for black Americans. But it’s true. I’m going to be the first high-profile conservative to support reparations.
Black Americans deserve reparations. Let’s be honest. Look at their cities in ruins. Black inner cities in America look like Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombs hit.
Have you been to any of them lately? Of course not. What sane person would take a chance by driving through the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn, or Crown Heights, or Bedford Stuyvesant, or Harlem or the infamous South Bronx? Or how about Chicago’s black South Side? How about virtually all-black inner cities in Detroit; Baltimore; East St Louis; Newark, New Jersey; Oakland, California; Liberty City in Miami; Cleveland; New Orleans, Memphis, Tennessee; Atlanta and more. The list goes on and on.
These places are synonymous with murder, violent gangs and violent crime. Black cities and neighborhoods are a war zone. A black-on-black genocide. An American tragedy. Not to mention the drug needles, poop, pee, condoms and garbage that litter their mean and hopeless streets.
Black lives do matter. So, yes, they do deserve reparations.
But who is to blame? It’s sure not white Americans. Most of us have had nothing to do with the decline of black America. The vast majority of white Americans have never done a bad thing to a black person in our lives. We don’t run their cities. We don’t go near their cities. We literally have nothing to do with black America.
And none of us were alive for slavery or the civil war, or Jim Crow. My grandparents came to America in the 1920s. They lived in New York. They experienced their own prejudice and discrimination. My relatives had nothing to do with slavery, racism or any civil rights violations.
So, yes blacks are owed reparations. But who’s to blame? There’s only one common denominator: DEMOCRATS. . . .
