An explosion last May at a Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China, killed four people and injured 18. It built iPads.
The explosion ripped through Building A5 on a Friday evening last May, an eruption of fire and noise that twisted metal pipes as if they were discarded straws.
When workers in the cafeteria ran outside, they saw black smoke pouring from shattered windows. It came from the area where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day.
Two people were killed immediately, and over a dozen others hurt. As the injured were rushed into ambulances, one in particular stood out. His features had been smeared by the blast, scrubbed by heat and violence until a mat of red and black had replaced his mouth and nose.
“Are you Lai Xiaodong’s father?” a caller asked when the phone rang at Mr. Lai’s childhood home. Six months earlier, the 22-year-old had moved to Chengdu, in southwest China, to become one of the millions of human cogs powering the largest, fastest and most sophisticated manufacturing system on earth. That system has made it possible for Apple and hundreds of other companies to build devices almost as quickly as they can be dreamed up.
“He’s in trouble,” the caller told Mr. Lai’s father. “Get to the hospital as soon as possible.”
In the last decade, Apple has become one of the mightiest, richest and most successful companies in the world, in part by mastering global manufacturing. Apple and its high-technology peers — as well as dozens of other American industries — have achieved a pace of innovation nearly unmatched in modern history.
However, the workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions, according to employees inside those plants, worker advocates and documents published by companies themselves. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious — sometimes deadly — safety problems.
Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk. Under-age workers have helped build Apple’s products, and the company’s suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors.
More troubling, the groups say, is some suppliers’ disregard for workers’ health. Two years ago, 137 workers at an Apple supplier in eastern China were injured after they were ordered to use a poisonous chemical to clean iPhone screens. Within seven months last year, two explosions at iPad factories, including in Chengdu, killed four people and injured 77. Before those blasts, Apple had been alerted to hazardous conditions inside the Chengdu plant, according to a Chinese group that published that warning.
“If Apple was warned, and didn’t act, that’s reprehensible,” said Nicholas Ashford, a former chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, a group that advises the United States Labor Department. “But what’s morally repugnant in one country is accepted business practices in another, and companies take advantage of that.” . . .
“We’ve known about labor abuses in some factories for four years, and they’re still going on,” said one former Apple executive who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements. “Why? Because the system works for us. Suppliers would change everything tomorrow if Apple told them they didn’t have another choice.”
“If half of iPhones were malfunctioning, do you think Apple would let it go on for four years?” the executive asked. . . .

Chastened, the Make-A-Wish Foundation reversed course and decided not to mandate the vaccine.

We respect everyone’s freedom of choice. Make-a-Wish will continue to grant wishes for all eligible children. Make-a-Wish will not require anyone to get vaccinated to receive a wish,” Make-A-Wish declared Sunday following public outrage including from Rob Schneider. “Any child fighting a critical illness is eligible for Make-a-Wish. While it does not reflect the majority of children we serve, we do occasionally serve children whose medical provider has determined that the child will not survive their illness. In time-sensitive situations involving an end-of-life diagnosis, a special process has been and will continue to be in place regardless of vaccination status.”
Schneider previously lambasted Alec Baldwin’s hateful propaganda impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, saying, “To me, the genius of Dana Carvey was Dana always had empathy for the people he played, and Alec Baldwin has nothing but a fuming, seething anger toward the person he plays.” Schneider said, “I don’t find his impression to be comical. Because, like I said, I know the way his politics lean and it spoils any surprise. There’s no possible surprise. He so clearly hates the man he’s playing.” Schneider also endorsed liberty Republican Tim Donnelly for Governor of California in a recent election and said that Democrats “abandoned me, and so I have abandoned them.”

It was highlighted by the case of former police support officer Zoe Watts, who was jailed last week for a string of offences including building an improvised bomb and having a cache of illegal weapons including knives and a stun gun.

Even kids-book writers feel forced to apologize for condemning anti-Semitism
Israel, and Jews, can’t get a break these days — even from kid-lit authors.
Addressing the US surge in anti-Semitism, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators finally condemned Jew-hatred in a statement last month — but only to water it down with a later post.
Anti-Semitism has fueled “a 75% increase in hate speech and random violence against Jewish people,” read the group’s initial statement. “As writers, illustrators, and translators of children’s literature, we are responsible for promoting equity” for “all children and all families.”
The group warned that “silence” on such an issue “is often mistaken for acceptance” and urged readers to speak out “against all forms of hate, including antisemitism.”
Yet after some pushback — particularly from one Palestinian-American activist and writer — the group posted an apology to “everyone in the Palestinian community who felt unrepresented, silenced or marginalized” and to the activist, in particular, for deleting her posts on its Facebook page (which it apparently first considered hateful) and blocking her on Twitter.
SCBWI’s diversity chief, a black Jewish woman, actually resigned, saying she regrettably “neglected to address the rise in Islamophobia” — and later reported getting death threats. . . .
Amazon Calls for Higher Taxes on All Corporations Except Itself
While the tech giant Amazon has publicly endorsed proposals to raise the corporate tax rate in the United States, the company has been secretly lobbying to keep its own tax rates low, Politico reports.
Last year, during the 2020 presidential election, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos openly supported then-candidate Joe Biden’s proposals to raise taxes on American corporations. Those proposals have re-emerged in recent weeks as a possible means of funding a possible infrastructure bill, and Biden has been advocating for other countries around the world to adopt higher corporate tax rates as well.
But recently, Amazon has been stepping up its lobbying efforts to try to convince Congress and the White House to allow the company to keep using certain tax breaks in order to keep its own rates low. The retail giant hired a tax lobbyist named Joshua Odintz, who formerly worked as a Democratic aide on Capitol Hill and then as an official in the Obama Administration. In addition to Amazon’s own efforts, similar lobbying has been undertaken by a group known as the “R&D Coalition,” which consists of several companies and organizations including Amazon, Intel, and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Odintz and the R&D Coalition have been lobbying in favor of preserving the “research and development tax deduction.” First implemented in 1981, the R&D deduction includes a tax credit that incentivizes companies to invest more in R&D in exchange for tax breaks on all expenditures related to these areas of spending.
Although the R&D deduction is not the only method through which Amazon and other companies can lower their own taxes, Amazon confirmed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the bulk of its tax reductions “were primarily related to the U.S. federal research and development credit.”
While the exact amount of money saved by this credit alone remains uncertain, Matthew Gardner, senior fellow at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, said that it is “very likely they’re getting hundreds of millions of dollars a year in R&D tax credits.”
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed by Congress in 2017 and signed into law by President Donald Trump, actually took steps to reduce the impact of the R&D tax credit. The law required companies to deduct their total amounts of R&D funding every year over the course of five years, which reduced the overall value of the tax break.
When asked about the possible R&D loophole, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, speaking on behalf of the Biden Administration, said that “promoting innovation is a critical priority…continuing to allow firms to expense R&D rather than shifting to amortizing could be one very effective way to bring that about.”

I’m the last guy you’d ever imagine coming out in support of reparations for black Americans. But it’s true. I’m going to be the first high-profile conservative to support reparations.
Black Americans deserve reparations. Let’s be honest. Look at their cities in ruins. Black inner cities in America look like Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombs hit.
Have you been to any of them lately? Of course not. What sane person would take a chance by driving through the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn, or Crown Heights, or Bedford Stuyvesant, or Harlem or the infamous South Bronx? Or how about Chicago’s black South Side? How about virtually all-black inner cities in Detroit; Baltimore; East St Louis; Newark, New Jersey; Oakland, California; Liberty City in Miami; Cleveland; New Orleans, Memphis, Tennessee; Atlanta and more. The list goes on and on.
These places are synonymous with murder, violent gangs and violent crime. Black cities and neighborhoods are a war zone. A black-on-black genocide. An American tragedy. Not to mention the drug needles, poop, pee, condoms and garbage that litter their mean and hopeless streets.
Black lives do matter. So, yes, they do deserve reparations.
But who is to blame? It’s sure not white Americans. Most of us have had nothing to do with the decline of black America. The vast majority of white Americans have never done a bad thing to a black person in our lives. We don’t run their cities. We don’t go near their cities. We literally have nothing to do with black America.
And none of us were alive for slavery or the civil war, or Jim Crow. My grandparents came to America in the 1920s. They lived in New York. They experienced their own prejudice and discrimination. My relatives had nothing to do with slavery, racism or any civil rights violations.
So, yes blacks are owed reparations. But who’s to blame? There’s only one common denominator: DEMOCRATS. . . .

Javad Mirtavoosi, general manager of Pacific Hills Banquet & Event Center, told The Orange County Register on Friday that when the July 17 event was first booked, the center expected it to be a “gathering.”
“As soon as we found out who the speakers were we immediately canceled it,” Mirtavoosi told the local news outlet.
Mirtavoosi declined to say whether the event was canceled because of political differences with the House lawmakers. Instead, he said, “We just thought it would be best for our facility to cancel.”
“We just want to stay clear of that,” he added, according to the Register.
Flyers promoting the event began circulating on social media this week, including the name of the event center in Laguna Hills, located about 45 miles south of Los Angeles.

Recall, Wi Spa made headlines last month when a female customer freaked out after seeing a biological male walking around with his penis out around children in the women’s section at Wi Spa.
The viral video from two weeks ago prompted another woman to come forward and share a similar terrifying experience at the same Korean spa.
The woman, who obscured her identity and goes by “Anita” out of fear of being cancelled, said she was shocked to find a person with a “beard and penis” in the women-only hot tub.
The woman told the Daily Mail she is a registered Democrat an LGBTQ supporter but wanted to protect her daughter’s innocence.
“Anita” described the man as an activist who purposely entered the women’s area of the spa to expose himself and enjoyed seeing everyone’s reaction.
She blocked her daughter’s view and left the spa and complained to the employees who told her they can’t do anything because he is a “pre-operation transgender person.”
Even more disturbing, when Anita called the police, the officer blamed her for “putting her child in that situation.”
Despite all of this, “Anita” was afraid to offend the pervert: “I’m trying really hard not to get in trouble calling the person with a penis a male, but the ‘guy’ was this skinny white guy with scraggly long hair and a beard. He had a five o’clock shadow on him, and his penis and scrotum hanging out.

Anita described her January 2020 visit to the spa, which has a clothed section for both sexes, and separate sections for men and women with locker rooms, hot tubs, massage, relaxation and pampering rooms where patrons are traditionally unclothed.
‘When I walked into the women’s section everyone was naked,’ she said.
‘I wasn’t raised to be super comfortable being naked around others. But I’m from LA and it’s kind of hip to participate in authentic cultural things.
‘I didn’t want my daughter to feel uncomfortable and I saw a lot of little Korean girls naked with their grandmas and their moms, it was really cute actually. I was like, wow this is something that I didn’t know existed, this is awesome.’
Anita and her daughter put on face masks, ate snacks and hung out in the sauna. Then the little girl asked to swim in the hot tub.
‘We were in there with five or six other women. She was swimming and splashing at me and stuff,’ she said.
‘Then these three people came and sat down on the edge of the hot tub. It was two women and what appeared 100% to be a man.
‘The other Korean women in the hot tub were looking at each other like ‘what the f**k?’ We all suddenly were quietly communicating with our eyes.
‘[The Korean women] were motioning at my daughter, she was giggling and splashing, she hadn’t noticed.
‘All around the locker room you see all the women suddenly whispering and this tense feeling.
‘I saw old ladies poking out from behind the shower stall, holding their towels up, looking horrified. Nobody says anything. All the women are in shock but also don’t want to say anything.

Former Bears linebacker Barkevious Mingo charged with indecency with child in Texas
Arlington Police say Mingo, now with the Falcons, was arrested Thursday and released after posting a $25,000 bond.
ARLINGTON, Texas — NFL linebacker Barkevious Mingo, who is currently with the Atlanta Falcons, has been arrested in Texas on a charge of indecency with a child-sexual contact, police said Saturday.
Mingo, 30, was arrested on Thursday by police in the Dallas suburb of Arlington. Jail records listed an address for Mingo in West Monroe, Louisiana.
Arlington Police said in a statement that the agency could provide no further information about the investigation, citing “the nature of the charges and age of the victim.”
“Mingo turned himself in on his own accord in consultation with his attorney,” police said.
Mingo was released after posting a $25,000 bond.
His attorney did not immediately return an email seeking comment on Saturday.
Mingo was chosen by Cleveland as the sixth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. He signed a one-year contract in March with the Falcons. Mingo also has played for Chicago, Houston, New England and Seattle during his NFL career.
“Our organization became aware of the allegations involving Barkevious Mingo today and are currently gathering information on this incident. The Falcons take the allegations very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation,” the Falcons said in a statement. . . .

The city of Charlottesville, Va. followed up its removal of two controversial Confederate statues Saturday with the lightning-fast toppling of a third local landmark: a monumental tribute to explorers Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Sacagawea.
In an emergency meeting called with 20 minutes’ notice, the Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to cancel another piece of public art targeted by left-wing activists.
“I feel that it should just be melted down,” Rose Ann Abrahamson, a Sacagawea descendant, said during the council meeting, The Daily Progress reported. “I feel that it’s entirely offensive and it should be obliterated.”
Within minutes, a city work crew — the same group that had dismantled equestrian statues of Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson earlier Saturday — arrived with ropes, a crane, and pry bars to wrench the artwork off the plinth where it had stood on Charlottesville’s West Main Street since 1919. . . .

Confederate flag to fly again in rally at South Carolina Capitol
Dueling observances Saturday at the South Carolina Capitol building in Columbia will mark the sixth anniversary of the Confederate flag being removed from the Statehouse grounds.
The group Flags Across The South will stage a rally at the north stairs of the state Capitol and raise the Confederate battle flag from a temporary flag pole behind police barricades between 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Afterward, from 1:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Columbia Racial Justice Coalition will orchestrate a “flag removal celebration,” marking the removal of the Confederate flag from where it stood beside the Confederate Soldiers’ Monument near the Gervais Street side of the Statehouse between 2000 and 2015.
A Confederate flag flew on the Capitol building in Columbia for more than 77 years before former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a bill July 9, 2015, to remove the flag.
Haley called for the flag to be taken down in the wake of Dylan Roof shooting nine Black churchgoers June 17, 2015, at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. Roof was sentenced to death in 2017.
After the shooting, racist rants and photos of Roof posing with Confederate flags surfaced on social media, including one at the Statehouse. . . .
Arizona Lawmaker Advises People to Put up ‘No Trespassing’ Signs to Deter Door-to-Door Vaccine Checks
At age 61, Daniel J. Miller of Parks, Arizona, says there’s no way he’s ever going to take the COVID-19 shot—even if the government comes knocking at his door.
It isn’t just a matter of his religious beliefs and faith in his own natural immune system that emboldens him, it’s a matter of personal choice and medical privacy, Miller says.
So when the Biden administration announced earlier this week that it’s considering sending people door to door to persuade the unvaccinated, Miller’s reaction was, “He’s got to be out of his mind.”
“[President Joe Biden] is way out of bounds,” Miller said. “There’s no reason for him to say take the shot just because he thinks you should. It’s your body, not his.”
Earlier this week, Biden lobbied for higher numbers of Americans to get vaccinated even if it means going “community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood, and oft-times door to door, literally knocking on doors.”
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich was quick to respond. In a July 6 letter to the Biden administration, Brnovich said he was “greatly alarmed” by remarks indicating the possible use of medical records to obtain contact information on Americans who haven’t been vaccinated.
“If this is the case, this is a severe breach of privacy, and I will not tolerate such intrusions within Arizona,” Brnovich wrote. . . .

Tucker Carlson took aim at the Biden Administration for their vaccine policies, saying they are “no longer pro-choice” after it was reported they intend to go door-to-door to ensure Americans are fully vaccinated.
Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said Thursday on CNN that “it is absolutely the government’s business” to know if Americans have been vaccinated.
“Perhaps we should point out, the federal government has had to spend trillions of dollars to try to keep Americans alive during this pandemic,” Becerra said during his interview on the administration’s vaccine policies. “We want to give people the sense that they have the freedom to choose, but we hope they choose to live.” . . .

Failed mayoral candidate ambushed and murdered FBI agent: feds
A man who campaigned against gun violence while running for mayor of an Indiana city is accused of murdering an FBI agent in an ambush Wednesday.
Shane Meehan, 44, allegedly tossed a Molotov cocktail at the Terre Haute FBI building and then shot FBI Task Force Officer Gregory Ferency when he came outside, federal prosecutors said in a press release.
Ferency, who also served as a Terre Haute Police Detective, was able to return fire but later died of his injuries, according to the feds.
Another FBI agent ran out of the building and shot Meehan, who then drove to a local hospital to treat his two bullet wounds, officials alleged.
Meehan is charged with murder of a federal agent, and faces life in prison.
“An attack on law enforcement is an attack on us all,” said Acting US Attorney John Childress.
Pfizer says it is developing a Covid booster shot to deal with the delta variant
Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech said Thursday they are developing a booster shot to combat the highly transmissible delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.
As the pharmaceutical companies announced their shot, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that fully vaccinated people do not need those types of booster shots.
“People who are fully vaccinated are protected from severe disease and death, including from the variants currently circulating in the country such as Delta,” the FDA and CDC said Thursday, according to Axios. “Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time.”
The companies cited a study by the Israel Ministry of Health released on Monday that showed the “vaccine efficacy has declined six months post-vaccination, at the same time that the Delta variant is becoming the dominate variant in the country.” . . .
North Dakota Sues the Biden Administration Over Oil and Gas Leases
The State of North Dakota has sued the Biden administration for suspending new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters, claiming it will cost the state almost $5 billion in lost revenue and keep more than half a billion barrels of oil in the ground.
President Biden ordered the suspension days after taking office as part of his climate change agenda — but the move was blocked in federal court in June, allowing states to proceed with new leases.
North Dakota joins 14 other states with Republican attorneys general who have filed lawsuits over the moratorium on new leases.
The Department of the Interior, the federal agency that oversees oil and gas leases, declined to comment.
In the lawsuit, filed Wednesday in United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, the state called the moratorium unlawful, saying that the Interior Department overstepped its authority in suspending the sale of leases.
It also claimed that the suspension of two lease sales in North Dakota originally scheduled in March and June have already cost the state tens of millions in lost revenue. . . .

Lord Bethell said face coverings offered only ‘marginal protection’ when questioned over Government plans to lift the remaining coronavirus restrictions in England on July 19.
The move has faced criticism from more than 120 scientists and doctors who signed a letter in The Lancet accusing the UK Government of conducting a ‘dangerous and unethical experiment’. . . . .
Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones Joins Howard U Faculty After Tenure “Debacle” at UNC-Chapel Hill
After months of controversy, acclaimed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones has announced that she will join the faculty at Howard University, one of the country’s most prestigious historically Black universities, instead of joining the faculty at her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she went to graduate school. The decision by Hannah-Jones comes after her tenure was initially denied by the UNC board of trustees in May, when it was unanimously approved by the faculty. The board typically rubber-stamps tenure for professors who have won such approval from their peers, and it reversed the decision after protests from alumni, faculty and students. Hannah-Jones has been a target of right-wing vitriol since she spearheaded the award-winning 1619 Project for The New York Times, which sought to reevaluate the role of slavery in the founding of the United States. Joe Killian, investigative reporter for NC Policy Watch whom Nikole Hannah-Jones credits with breaking the story about the “discrimination I faced in the UNC tenure debacle,” says the tenure fight is a “microcosm” of the wider ideological divisions in the United States. He notes that the Chapel Hill board of trustees is filled with political appointees whose interests do not align with those of the student body. “The board at Chapel Hill is stacked with white men, stacked with people who are conservative, and it doesn’t look anything like the university itself,” Killian says.
Speaker Pelosi’s Husband Made Millions in Transactions Related to Recent House Bills – Democrats Claim She Had No Involvement – Move Along
The Pelosi family is likely the most corrupt family to ever be related to the US Speaker of the House.
Earlier today the Washington Examiner reported on Nancy Pelosi’s husband who made millions in recent transactions related to actions taken in the US House.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, bought up to $11 million worth of Big Tech stocks in the last two months as an anti-tech package of bills makes its way through the House at the same time.
In May and June, Pelosi purchased $4.8 million worth of Google shares, up to $1 million worth of Amazon call options, up to $250,000 of Apple call options, and up to $5 million of call options for Nvidia, the large semiconductor, graphics, and electronics company, according to a financial disclosure form filed last week.
A call option is a financial contract that allows a buyer the right to purchase a stock or asset at a set price within a specific time period.
The stock transactions were completed just weeks before the House Judiciary Committee passed six bipartisan antitrust bills aimed at reining in tech giants such as Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
According to a report at FOX News, the speaker doesn’t own any stock and didn’t break any laws:
The speaker has no involvement or prior knowledge of these transactions,” a spokesperson for Pelosi’s office told FOX Business. “The speaker does not own any stock.”
Paul Pelosi, who runs a real estate and venture capital investment and consulting firm, did not violate the STOCK Act unless he acted on nonpublic information, which seems unlikely, according to former Rep. Jill Long Thompson, D-Ind.
Notice how the response is about the speaker and not her husband?
Corruption clearly sizzles in the Pelosi home. The Speaker pushes fake impeachments and now has called for a biased investigation into January 6th protests over the stolen election. Pelosi’s son was and probably still is involved in corruption in Ukraine along with the Bidens and the Kerrys.
Even though Paul Pelosi is married to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., it is unlikely that he would “have any information that someone else wouldn’t,” she said. “Members of Congress make it clear what their positions are on these issues and the fact that they’re working on a piece of legislation that would be public information.”
